Several areas of the world are now enforcing new environmental regulations that govern the manufacture and disposal of products that include electronic components. First up was Europe. The European Union's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive took effect in August of last year (2005), and the Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) took effect starting in July of 2006. RoHS has caused reverberations around the world. In fact, since these directives became public in 2002, most companies in the industry have been planning for the transition to no-lead products.
